Because heavy duty applications demand high performance.
Commonly used in high voltage switchgear, high voltage fuses are rated above 10,000V. High voltage fuses, also known as HV fuses, can be either current limiting (backup or general purpose fuses) or non current limiting (expulsion fuses). Backup fuses interrupt fault currents that fall between the rated minimum interrupting current and the rated maximum interrupting current. General purpose high voltage fuses interrupt fault currents between the rated breaking capacity and any current that will take one hour to melt the fuse element. Expulsion fuses are fast acting fuses that utilize a special gas mechanism to extinguish dangerous arcs.
HRC high voltage fuse: An important
One of the most common type of high voltage fuse is the high voltage HRC fuse, which stands for high rupturing capacity. High voltage HRC fuses use a special type of construction to withstand and interrupt large currents. The element inside these fuses is surrounded by insulating materials that would cool down large currents including marble, porcelain, ceramic, just to name a few. So when a large current runs through these fuses, the thermal buildup is not enough to melt the element, and is absorbed by the insulating material. The thermal reaction with the insulating material creates a highly resistant material which then subdues the current. DIN-type fuses are also considered a type of high voltage HRC fuse.
