What does a push button switch do?
Push button switches and pilot devices are used throughout commercial, industrial, mining, agricultural and manufacturing applications in order to control machine processes. Push button switches and pilot devices serve as a means of communication between operator and machinery. Push button switches come in three standard sizes - 30mm, 16mm and 22mm. These push button switches can be either flush mounted or panel mounted, depending on your application and configuration requirements. Push button switches can be used to start up equipment, stop equipment (in emergency situations or otherwise), reset equipment, and more.
The different types of push buttons.
Push button switches come in a variety of different types, colors and sizes. For example, flush mount or flat push button switches are standalone switches, and don’t need to be installed as part of a system where as a panel push button switch is designed to be installed as part of a bigger configuration inside of a control panel. Industrial and heavy duty push button switches are built with die cast construction and designed to withstand harsh conditions. These types of heavy duty push button switches can even be waterproof for outdoor installation.

Maintained Push Buttons & Pilot Devices
When pressed, a maintained push button switch keeps the circuit closed even when pressure is released from the button. For a maintained push button switch to return to its original position, it must be pressed again. Available in all three standard sizes, maintained switches are used in HVAC systems, manufacturing, mining, food processing and more. Emergency push button switches are a type of maintained push button switch.
Momentary Switches
Unlike maintained switches, momentary switches open or close the circuit for as long as pressure is applied to the button. Depending on the push button’s resting or “normal” state, momentary switches can be either normally open or normally closed.
IEC Push Buttons & Pilot Devices
IEC pilot devices have a different set of regulations and standards than their NEMA counterparts. They also differ in design and price point, but not necessarily in performance. IEC pilot devices are governed by a strict, universally understood color-coding system, and also require any ON/OFF pilot devices to be clearly marked with universally acceptable symbols.
NEMA Push Buttons & Pilot Devices
NEMA push button switches are the North American standard. NEMA push buttons differ from IEC push buttons, as NEMA push buttons are smaller than the panel button opening. NEMA push buttons are also installed from the front of the panel.
