What is a drive isolation/SCR transformer?
Like any other electrical transformer, a drive isolation transformer (or DIT for short) converts voltage from one type to another, however DIT’s are specifically designed to match the required voltage of an SCR drive (silicon controlled rectifier). That being said, never try to replace a drive isolation transformer or an SCR transformer with a general purpose transformer. Drive isolation transformers and SCR transformers are built specifically to handle the heavy stresses, DC current spikes and other demands of silicon controlled rectifier applications, while maximizing the quality of power and protecting the rest of the electrical system from heavier loads.
Specially designed for heavy duty requirements.
Drive isolation transformers and SCR transformers are designed to withstand frequent short-circuits that are commonly associated with silicon controlled rectifier applications. They also have several benefits especially when power quality and short-circuit prevention are of utmost importance. They also help to isolate noise and consequently helping to prevent overheating from harmonics and vibration, though the “isolation” in the name refers to the isolated primary and secondary terminals that protect the motor drive.
Common sizes for drive isolation transformers range from 5 to 600 horsepower. Drive isolation transformers have a wide variety of heavy-duty applications including steel mills and other heavy industrial machinery, are available in both liquid-filled and dry-type, and can be installed both indoors and outdoors.
