Every push button switch can be categorized into two groups: normally closed push button switches and normally open push button switches. The resting or neutral position of a normally closed push button switch keeps the circuit closed (ON position). There is current flowing through the circuit in the neutral position. The neutral position of a normally open push button switch does not conduct a current, and keeps the circuit open (OFF or standby position). Both normally open and normally closed push button switches are used anywhere equipment and machinery control is required.

Which types of switch is right for me?

Normally closed and normally open push button switches are most often momentary push button switches but maintained models are also available. Normally open push button switches are the most popular, as most equipment is in an OFF state unless activated by the operator and not vice versa. However, most emergency push buttons are normally closed, and will open the circuit when pushed to halt the current in dangerous situations. Normally open and normally closed push button switches are available across all standard push button sizes and designs, both illuminated and non-illuminated.
