What is a dry type transformer?

Dry type transformers are static transformers that use a specialized insulation system to keep cool, differentiating them from liquid-filled transformers that use oil or other fire-resistant liquid. Because of this, dry type transformers do not need any type of toxin vents, lowering the risk of fire and other dangers. Like any transformer though, they do generate heat and use vents to dissipate it, keeping the transformer from overheating. Dry type transformer clearance requirements state that a dry type transformer needs at least 6 inches between a vent opening and a wall (or other object or obstruction in close proximity).

Dry type transformers are commonly used across industrial, commercial, and mining applications. They are available in single-phase and three-phase, low and medium voltage, and are safe for both outdoor and indoor installation. Advantages of dry type transformers include being much more environmentally friendly than their liquid-filled counterparts, which makes them a preferable choice when the situation allows.

Dry type transformer installation guidelines.

Dry type transformers can be installed indoors with minimal maintenance at standard indoor conditions. If you need to install a dry type transformer outdoors, they will need more maintenance as their coils will need to be cleaned more regularly, unless the transformer is completely enclosed and sealed off from rain and other environmental factors. Overall however, dry type transformers are static units so whether they’re installed indoors or outdoors, they still require far less maintenance than liquid-filled transformers, saving you both time and money in the long run.
