Federal Pacific Circuit Breakers

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) breakers were widely installed in residential and light commercial electrical panels from the 1950s through the 1980s. Many electricians encounter Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels and breakers when working in older homes, apartment buildings, and small commercial facilities.

Although these breakers were once extremely common, Federal Pacific equipment has become controversial due to documented safety concerns surrounding certain Stab-Lok breakers. As a result, many electrical professionals recommend replacing Federal Pacific panels entirely when possible.

However, in situations where full panel replacement is not immediately feasible, replacement breakers are sometimes sourced to restore temporary protection or maintain system functionality until upgrades can be completed. In these cases, replacement options may include aftermarket breakers manufactured by companies such as Connecticut Electric, designed to fit existing Federal Pacific panels.

Because many original Federal Pacific breakers are no longer manufactured, replacement units may also be available as tested used breakers, though system upgrades are often recommended when feasible.
