What is a step down transformer?
Step down transformers are essentially buck boost transformers that only buck, and don’t boost. Their purpose is to step down (decrease) the current on the secondary side while the power level remains the same. The wire used on the secondary side should be of a higher gauge than the primary side, as the current on the secondary side will be higher than the primary side.
These three phase transformers are most commonly used in residential or light industrial and commercial uses to provide safe voltage levels for appliances, power tools, lighting circuits, and more.
What should I look for in a step down transformer?
The coils in step down transformers can be made of a variety of materials including aluminum, copper or iron. However, the conductivity of each of these metals varies, resulting in varying levels of efficiency. While all these metals are satisfactory, copper is the most efficient.
